The Cold War had intensified fears of women’s liberated sexuality and was thus met with a rush to domesticity, traditional gender roles, a patriarchal, chauvinistic society which sought to further control women’s lives. This urge to domesticate combined with sexualized stereotypes of black men as lustful, uninhibited, and virile made white women marrying black men a disgrace23. Interracial marriages between African Americans and Caucasian Americans in the United States are the least common of all interracial marriages, with marriages between black women and white men being the less frequent of the two combinations. Since the 1990s, however, increasing numbers of black women have been marrying white men. This book examines the dynamics of race, social class and marriage in contemporary American society specifically with respect to marriages between African Americans and Caucasian Americans, comparing and contrasting the experiences of couples in both intermarriage patterns.

  • For example, in 1880, the tenth US census of Louisiana alone counted 57% of interracial marriages between these Chinese to be with black and 43% to be with white women.
  • Because almost all of the Chinese indentured immigrants were men, they tended to intermarry with both East Indians and Africans, and thus the Chinese of Guyana did not remain as physically distinct as other groups.
  • Since the 1960s, young women had an incentive to move from countryside to the city due to the desire of chasing a better life.
  • While intermarriage rates ranged from 16% to 18% among women younger than 50, rates dropped to 12% among those 50 and older.
  • When we are open with each other, we can broaden each other’s perspectives, approach the world in different ways, and even find that there is a connection in our differences.

Hadith Bayad wa Riyad, a 12th-century Arabic tale from Al-Andalus, was a love story involving an Iberian girl and a Damascene man. Simultaneously, however, racism remains an ongoing issue in both the state and the nation. The interracial marriage sparked a furore among both the tribal elders of the Bamangwato and the apartheid government of South Africa. The latter objected to the idea of an interracial couple ruling just across their northern border, and exerted pressure to have Khama removed from his chieftainship.
