India vs England LIVE Cricket Score, 3rd ODI: Gill-Kohli put on 50-run stand, IND 99/1 vs ENG in Ahmedabad

Joe Root has been introduced into the attack which is quite a gamble by Buttler with both right-handers in the middle. Root does have a knack for picking wickets and in a Test match in 2021 he did pick a five-wicket haul in this very ground. The conditions were quite different back then and are different today. Meanwhile, Atkinson who has been taken to the cleaners in the last game has been introduced from the other end. Double change for England and this is the passage where they would be looking to tighten these two batters. 

The thing to watch out for today will be how Buttler will rotate his bowlers. In the first two games he had to defend a total hence at times he was proactive and gave the bowlers shorter bursts however, today they are bowling first, and assuming they will bowl fifty overs stacking up Adil Rashid's over will be very interesting to see as he got better and better as his spell went on in the first two games. The likes of Liam Livingstone too were thrown the ball more as a gamble than as a fifth bowling option to pick wickets. Different test for Buttler the captain today.

Virat Kohli has got to a start here. He playing some lovely shots down the ground. He is looking in good touch here does Kohli. Going into the Champions Trophy 2025 he needs some runs under the belt just to get some confidence. Rohit did manage a ton in the last game and given the way Kohli started he would be looking to get one as well. Meanwhile Shubman Gill at the other end is looking in sublime touch. In both the games in this series, he has looked in good form but he could not convert it into a century. Gill too would be hoping to convert the innings into a big score.

While Wood is bowling well from one end, Saqib has not his lengths yet. He is looking to look for a moment but there is not much on offer for him. However, Wood with his extra pace is troubling the batters. However, whatever the seam moment he did get with the ball early on will dry up pretty quickly. It will be interesting to see how this pitch responds as the ball gets older and softer. We have seen in the famous World Cup 2023 final and other occasions it gets tougher and tougher to bat as the ball gets older however, do England seamers have the skill set to utilize the ball is something to be seen.

Rohit's wicket is quite a concern yet again. Though he did score a magnificent 100 in his previous game he wasn't tested with such line and length in the previous game. It was the same area where Rohit had struggled. He is getting squared up to deliveries the moment the ball is pitched in around that middle stump and him trying to play the ball on the leg side. However, he changes the bat angle in the final moments to cover the line of the ball when it moves late. It just might be the byproduct of him trying to be too attacking in white-ball cricket which has brought upon the flaw in his game. 

Saqib Mahmood took the new ball for England and he pitched a few up and tried to swing the balls however, there was not much help. It is a black soil wicket once again similar to Cuttack. As we update Mark Wood has been introduced into the attack and he has picked up Rohit Sharma. It was a cracking delivery from the new ball bowler. The ball pitched on around the middle stump and it moved slightly away from the stumps to take the outside edge and carried to the keeper behind. After scoring a ton in the previous game this a failure for Rohit and once again it is him staying on the backfoot.

The sun is shining bright here and it is an interesting call from England to bowl first. We have seen during the 2023 World Cup them having troubles in the heat of such. They are also playing four seamers in this attack which is a little odd call in this heat. Anyways both openers are in the middle and we are minutes underway from action.

This one is right in the centre, 66m to the left and right and 74m straight down the ground. This is the same pitch used for the World Cup final, black soil pitch. It played slower in the first half and better for batting in the second half. The hessian has just come off so it's a bit damp but there is still time left before play starts it should dry out. There are some cracks that could keep the bowlers interested. Looks like a bowl first wicket. One of those pitch where if a batter gets in he can score but it might not be easy for the new comer. We are gonna bowl first today. Little bit maybe, it may spin a bit later. We have batted first in the first two games so it will be a different experience today ahead of the Champions Trophy. It's a decent wicket, we played New Zealand in the World Cup a few years ago, it was a black soil pitch and it played better in the second half. We have one change - Tom Banton comes into the side.

I wanted to bat first and put runs on the board because we bowled first in the last two games. It was important for us to get a win in the last game. The fielders potrayed themselves well in the last two games, a lot of young blood. We want to continue to do well in the field. They are pretty new in their careers so we want to keep the pressure away from them. let them do their own and they have got a lot of potential. We have made some changes - Jadeja and Shami have been rested, unfortunately Varun has a sore calf. So, Washi, Kuldeep and Arshdeep come into the side.

While Rohit Sharma is generally a strong white-ball player, he hasn't quite mastered the swivelled Nataraja pull shot off the front foot against the new ball, likely due to a slight slowing in his weight transfer.  Otherwise, he's generally effective on good batting pitches.  His main vulnerability remains against lateral movement, particularly with the new ball, where his tendency to play straight lines can be exploited, as was seen in Australia.

“I really broke it down into pieces about how I wanted to bat,” he said after the game. “It’s a 50-over format, a little longer than the T20 format and a lot shorter than Test cricket – but obviously you still need to break it down and assess what you need to do at regular intervals and that is what I kept doing. It was important for a batter who gets set to bat as deep as possible, and that was my focus.”

Rohit Sharma silenced any doubts about his ODI form with two early, powerful shots in the second ODI against England.  A flicked six and a hit over long-off demonstrated his signature style and confidence.  This suggests a return to form, possibly sparked by a similar shot played in a Ranji Trophy match despite a poor overall performance in that game.

The Narendra Modi Stadium is known for offering a balanced pitch that provides assistance to both batters and bowlers. The surface generally starts with good bounce and carry, favoring fast bowlers in the initial overs. As the game progresses, the pitch tends to settle down, making batting easier, especially under lights. The pitch at Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to be good for batting, with some assistance for pacers early on. Spinners will be crucial in the middle overs, and a first-innings score of 270+ will be competitive.

England's batting lineup has been consistently collapsing in both the T20Is and ODIs, wasting the strong starts provided by openers Salt and Duckett.  Captain Buttler acknowledges the team is still developing, but the loss of Jacob Bethell to injury is a setback.  While Joe Root has performed well, other key batsmen like Harry Brook have been inconsistent, preventing England from capitalizing on good batting conditions.

Back in Ahmedabad! An ODI for the first since time that fateful November 19, 2023 afternoon. India sure would have done to leave behind the baggage and have their final lap of preparations nailed in today when they face England in the last ODI before they embark on the Champions Trophy journey. With the midnight news breaking Jasprit Bumrah's absence from the tournament, India will aim to have another look at Harshit Rana and perhaps Arshdeep Singh together to help Mohammad Shami share the load in Dubai. There could be a few more changes in the XI given that India have won the series 2-0 in Cuttack on Sunday.
